DAILY DEVOTIONAL – Day 11

So those who are last will be first. And those who are first will be last” (Matthew 20:16, CEB).

I recall Ted Turner once saying, “If only I had a little humility, I’d be perfect.”  We’ve all met people like Ted who, if they didn’t outright repeat these words, they most certainly put them into practice.  Oftentimes, such persons are the very ones staring back at us in the mirror.

Noted composer, Leonard Bernstein, was once asked which instrument he found to be the most difficult to play.  Bernstein replied saying, “Second fiddle.  I can get plenty of first violinists but to find one who can play second fiddle with enthusiasm—that’s a problem.”  None of us wants to take the back seat yet God calls us not to do great things, so much as to do the simple things with great love.

I’m talking about such things as taking out someone else’s trash or surrendering your parking space to another driver or calling someone who can’t say in five words what they can in 500.  In other words, don’t be too big to do something small.  As the saying goes, “Those who are too big in the britches will be exposed in the end.”  Stay humble, my friends!
