“All the earth worships you and sings praises to you; they sing praises to your name”

Psalm 66:4, ESV

I’ve taken to singing in the shower of late. This is a new practice for me. I credit the bathroom’s exhaust fan. It hums at a frequency of 466 hertz or a B-flat on the music scale. Most household appliances run at this level of sound.

Queen’s infamous, Bohemian Rhapsody, is played in B-flat. “I’m just a little silhouette of a man…”. I try and sing all four parts at the same time. Freddie Mercury would be proud, I’m sure.

Speaking of singing simultaneously. Some songbirds have two vocal chambers. This adaptation of nature allows them to sing an ascending and descending line concurrently.

These revelations shouldn’t come as a surprise. David claimed that all of earth worships and sings praises to God. So, too, does the universe. Astronomers have recorded the joyful sounds produced by the electromagnetic fields that surround the planets of our solar system. The rings of joy are all around us. If only we had ears to listen.

Researchers claim that singing or listening to music carries a myriad of benefits:

    • Blood flows more easily
    • It elevates mood and reduces depression
    • It reduces stress
    • It stimulates memories
    • It eases pain.

Even more, singing places us in the midst of the world’s mighty chorus. We join with the “voices” that surround us echoing praises to the One who created us all.

Louie Armstrong claimed that music is life itself. That statement might be a bit of a stretch. However, I do believe that music attunes us more closely to the One who said, “I am the resurrection and the life.”

So, in the words of the late Karen Carpenter:

                        Sing, sing a song,

                        Let the world sing along.

Sing of love there could be,

Sing for you and for me…

                        Just sing, sing a song.
