Listen Closely

Elijah was one of those larger than life kind of people. Just about everything he did had a dramatic flair. Personally, I think that a little bit of Elijah would have gone a long way.

Regardless, Elijah succeeded in everything he did‒‒at least until he didn’t. Following a spectacular victory over the priests of Baal Elijah grew depressed. Elijah had hoped his successes would have led to the repentance of Israel, and specifically the king and queen. However, his efforts fell far short of this goal. While throwing his own pity party, Elijah exaggerated his plight by claiming that he was the only person remaining who was loyal to God. “I’m the only one left,” Elijah cried (1 Kings 19:10, CEB).

How often have you felt that way? Nobody understands me. Everyone has abandoned me. I am left alone to deal with this mess.

The reality for Elijah was that he couldn’t see past his own grandiosity. He believed that he was the only dedicated God-follower left in Israel. Sadly, Elijah lost confidence in God.

It was at this point that God instructed Elijah to stand in front of a cave. Elijah was likely thrilled by the fantastic display God put on. God first sent a huge windstorm, followed by an earthquake that split rocks, concluding with an all-consuming fire. Yet God could be found in none of these powerful natural demonstrations.

However, before disappointment could set in, God spoke to Elijah with a simple question. “Why are you here, Elijah?” (1 Kings 19:13). God didn’t reveal Himself to Elijah in dramatic fashion. Rather God came to Elijah in a word.

God often comes to us in similar, non-spectacular ways. Through the kind gesture of a stranger. Through the gift of a mother’s embrace. Through the caution of a friend. Through the patient instruction of a mentor or even through the quiet counsel of God’s Spirit.

No lightening displays. No claps of thunder. No earth shattering effects. Yet God does what God has always promised to do. He makes Himself present.

I pray you will take these words as a measure of encouragement during these trying days. God has not and will never abandon us. Though the streets of our nation may be silent, pay careful attention. Listen closely. God has a good word for you, as well.
