“They sharpen their tongues like swords and aim cruel words like deadly arrows”. (Psalm 64:3, NIV)

Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words can never hurt me. Well, not so much. PET scans demonstrate that verbal abuse is as damaging to the human brain as physical abuse.

“All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction,
and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every
good work”.
(2 Timothy 3:16-17, ESV)

Ten years ago, I was holding a Bible study with a group of middle school students at the Brice Christian Academy in Columbus, Ohio. I was not surprised when asked this question: “How do we really know that the Bible is true?” It’s actually a good question given the fact that the Bible was written over a period of 1600 years, by no less than thirty different authors.

“He has told you, O mortal, what is good; and what does the LORD require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?”. (Micah 6:8, NRSV)

Christians are notorious for their selective hearing. My wife is threatening to buy me hearing aids so that I have no more excuses for missing her pleas to take out the garbage.      Sociologist, Richard Flory, recently wrote an article entitled, “Our Many Jesuses.” He conducted interviews with several evangelical Christians across America and discovered a distinctive, yet subtle, difference in their beliefs. In short, Flory found that many Christians find themselves in one of two camps.

“But those who wait on the Lord will find new strength. They will fly high on wings like eagles. They will run and not grow weary. They will walk and not faint”. (Isaiah 40:31, NLT)

Isaiah describes three distinct modes by which we move ahead in life. First, there are those seasons when we seem to soar like eagles. Eagles can reach speeds of up to eighty miles per hour. Eagles can reach heights over a mile above the earth. But the strength to soar comes from without, not within. Eagles glide along upward air currents called thermals. As heated air rises above the ground, the eagle will simply spread its wings and allow the wind to carry it thousands of feet without ever flapping its wings.

How long, LORD? Will you forget me forever? How long will you hide your face from me?”. (Psalm 13:1, NIV)

James Moore once wrote about a beautiful spring day. A little girl went for a walk with her grandfather. As they sauntered along, enjoying the beauty of God’s creation, they came upon a garden. The little girl ran ahead and found a gorgeous rosebush covered with roses. Some of the roses were still buds and some were in full bloom. The little girl plucked one of the rosebuds and examined it closely. Then, with her  fingers, she tried to open the rosebud and bring it to full bloom. But it didn’t work.
