 “Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourselves” (Philippians 2:3b, NRSV).

     These words contradict what our world teaches today. We are told that a self-actualized person possesses the qualities of confidence, decisiveness, assertiveness, and the like. I don’t take issue with such personal characteristics.

Daily Devotion Jan. 11, 2024

“Peter said to him, ‘You shall never wash my feet.’ Jesus answered him, ‘If I do not wash you, you have no share with me’” (John 13:1-8, ESV).

     We people are funny creatures. There are moments when we welcome the assistance of others and there are occasions when we refuse any help.

     I recall an instance in which a wheelchair-bound woman declined an offer from her neighbors to build a ramp into her home. I remember her words distinctly: “I never accept
charity.”

 “Better is open rebuke than hidden love. Wounds from a friend can be trusted…” (Proverbs 27:5-6, NIV).

     I Facebook messaged a friend the other day with whom I hadn’t connected with in several years. He remarked that he was shocked to see how much hair I had lost. I responded by telling him that I wasn’t shocked whatsoever that he hadn’t lost his panache for candor.

     (TMI)—Too Much Information. We live in a world that likes to overshare. From Hollywood actors and sport celebrities using Twitter as a platform to polish their image to Millennials who Snapchat their selfies in order to see who’s following them on social media. This present age is starving to get itself noticed.

     Shortly after my granddad died, my grandmother experienced an extended bout with depression. Elizabeth Kubler Ross claimed that depression is one of the five steps of grief. However, depression can become a chronic condition requiring medical and psychological intervention.

     The holidays can be a particularly difficult time for persons whose loved ones have died. For some, the pain of grief can intensify during the seasons when families gather together for special occasions. While many of us are celebrating, there are others who are suffering silently.
