“Therefore, if you were raised with Christ, look for the things that are above where Christ is sitting at God’s right side. Think about the things above and not things on earth” (Colossians 3:1-2, CEB).

The time has arrived to make a resolution. I’m not one for making New Year’s resolutions. Yet I once told my wife one year that I resolved to get into better shape. Round. She was not impressed.

“I thank my God always when I remember you in my prayers, because I hear of your love and of the faith that you have toward the Lord Jesus and for all the saints” (Philemon 1:7,ESV).

I recently received a letter of appreciation from a person I don’t know well. Apparently, this person witnessed an act of kindness I had performed for a stranger. The acquaintance took note of my actions and subsequently followed suit.

Scripture Isaiah 8:18-22, NASB

18  Behold, I and the children whom the LORD has given me are for signs and wonders in Israel from the LORD of armies, who dwells on Mount Zion. 19  When they say to you, “Consult the mediums and the spiritists who whisper and mutter,” should a people not consult their God? Should they consult the dead in behalf of the living?  20  To the  [a] Law and to the testimony!
If they do not speak in accordance with this word, it is because they have no dawn.  21  They will pass through  [b] the land dejected and hungry, and it will turn out that when they are hungry, they will become enraged and curse  [c] their king and their God as they face upward.  22  Then they will look to the earth, and behold, distress and darkness, the gloom of anguish; and they will be driven away into darkness.

We tend to think Christmas is about merry making.

But life is hard, isn’t it?? I can’t think of anyone who isn’t struggling through something.

“We are afflicted in every way but not crushed, perplexed but not driven to despair, persecuted but not forsaken, struck down but not destroyed” (2 Corinthians 4:8-9, NRSV).

Perseverance has a name. Moon. Moon is a humpback whale who recently swam more than 3000 miles from Canada to Hawaii with a broken spine. Researchers suspect the whale was the unfortunate casualty of a large vessel strike.
