“Be subject to one another in the fear of Christ” (Ephesians 5:21, NASB)

Fear is one of humanity’s greatest gifts. Fear is also humanity’s greatest struggle. Fear is necessary to alert us when danger presents itself. Fear engages adrenal activity in order to help our body move away quickly from potential harm.

Extended periods of fear, however, can do great damage to both our bodies and minds. Fear leads to hypertension, heart disease, and conditions such as post-traumatic stress. Fear is a double-agent bringing about both good and bad.

So, it is curious that Paul would encourage the church (and particularly husbands and wives) to act “in the fear of Christ.” There are many “fear of God” references in the Old Testament. I never much cared for these passages until I came to understand them better.

To fear God is not a posture of caution. To fear God is to perceive Him with awe and wonder. When I first saw the Austrian Alps I was filled with awe and wonder at the works of God’s creation. I realize the Alps aren’t an equal comparison with God Himself but perhaps you understand my intent.

Paul’s message to the church is that we should serve and love one another because we are so enamored with Christ’s love for us. The love of Jesus is so amazing that it compels us to turn toward and love each other in the same manner. Paul claims that the more often we pause and reflect on the astonishing love of Christ, the more eager we become to let his love shine.

My mother had an incredibly close relationship with Jesus. As a child, I recall Mom reading and praying her way through the Scriptures. She had a curious glow on her face in a way I imagine Moses did when he was met by God at the burning bush. I came to learn later in life that Mom rose early each day to bask in the warmth of God’s love for her. That same glow radiated upon her face throughout the day and in her relationships with each of her students. Those early morning moments of awe and wonder became the fuel that empowered my mother to serve and love others so effectively.

Therefore, my prayer for you this day is that you might take a few moments to gaze upon the mountain and capture a glimpse of Christ’s glory. May wonder and awe fill your heart with the light of God’s Spirit, so that you might radiate the brilliance of God’s love.

Prayer:
Lord God, center my attention on the amazing grace of Jesus. Move me to plunge my heart into the depths of the Scriptures, so that my words and actions may be saturated with your love today. Through Christ’s name I pray. Amen.
