Daily Devotion Nov. 2, 2023

“Sing to the LORD a new song,  for he has done marvelous things…”  (Psalm 98:1, NIV).

November has been designated as a month of gratitude for the church I serve. Each day will focus on a particular theme of gratitude. (Please see the calendar below for a complete listing.)

Today’s theme centers on a song for which we are most grateful. Recently, I have had J. J. Heller’s song, Things I’m Grateful For on my mind. In part, the lyrics rejoice in the lesser recognized blessings God gives us each day:

Skipping stones
Feeling known
The click of my key in the door
Summer rain
On windowpanes…

Holding hands
Weekend plans
And finding out what love is for
Open spaces
Fireplaces…

It’s how you keep
Showing me
Everything that I missed before
But I see ’em now
Too many to count
All of the things I’m thankful for
These are the things I’m thankful for.

Life is made up of little moments that ultimately create a bigger picture of what truly matters. The little moments are what bring the bigger picture into focus.

I have discovered that the more I enjoy the little things throughout my day, the more often I look back and realize they were big things. Time spent with friends around a fire pit. A walk through the woods with my wife. Spending an afternoon watching a ballgame with my dad. These become the moments that make my heart sing.

“Sing to the LORD a new song,  for he has done marvelous things…” (Psalm 98:1, NIV). The Psalm writer doesn’t want any of us to overlook the greatness of God’s goodness. Yet as is most often the case, the most extraordinary gifts of God come to us in the most ordinary of occasions.

So, keep your eyes peeled and keep your ears open. Be prepared to let your heart sing. Your next greatest memory may arise from the least expected moment.
