“Be gracious in your speech. The goal is to bring out the best in others in a conversation, not put them down, not cut them out” (Colossians 4:6, MSG)

I missed it. So, allow me to wish you a Happy National Common Courtesy Day! Last Tuesday, March 21st served as an annual reminder that graciousness and gratitude are the virtues that keep our world from slipping into a sea of anger and turmoil. Though you won’t find the words common courtesy in the Scriptures, Paul contends that our goal should move us to bring out the best in others.

In a world that grows busier by the day, we often forget the small gestures that can make big differences. Politeness will cost a person little but pays off very well. A courteous person who has no wealth is more likable than one who is wealthy and discourteous.

While good manners vary from culture to culture, there exists a set of behaviors that are universally accepted. Saying please and thank you are indispensable ways of letting others know you are not taking them for granted. The words, pardon and excuse me, likewise, go far in acknowledging the dignity of those whose paths you have hindered.

             Other courteous actions include:
               · Being on time
               · Tidying up after yourself
               · Responding to an invitation
               · Replying to a phone call or an email
               · Respecting the rules of events
               · Remember your phone is not an appendage.

Call me Old Fashioned. But acting with consideration toward others is something that never goes out of style.

However, not everyone will respond to your good manners in kind. Some may even react negatively toward you. Yet never allow the contrary actions of others to discourage you from acting with grace and understanding. We are to love both friend and foe the same way God loves us—unconditionally.

So, if you missed out on last Tuesday’s celebration of National Common Courtesy Day, make it your prayer to ask that God bring out the best in you today—that by doing so, you may make March 23rd the best day ever!
