“I thank my God always when I remember you in my prayers, because I hear of your love and of the faith that you have toward the Lord Jesus and for all the saints” (Philemon 1:7,ESV).

     I recently received a letter of appreciation from a person I don’t know well. Apparently, this person witnessed an act of kindness I had performed for a stranger. The acquaintance took note of my actions and subsequently followed suit.

Scripture Isaiah 8:18-22, NASB

18  Behold, I and the children whom the LORD has given me are for signs and wonders in Israel from the LORD of armies, who dwells on Mount Zion. 19  When they say to you, “Consult the mediums and the spiritists who whisper and mutter,” should a people not consult their God? Should they consult the dead in behalf of the living?  20  To the  [a] Law and to the testimony!
If they do not speak in accordance with this word, it is because they have no dawn.  21  They will pass through  [b] the land dejected and hungry, and it will turn out that when they are hungry, they will become enraged and curse  [c] their king and their God as they face upward.  22  Then they will look to the earth, and behold, distress and darkness, the gloom of anguish; and they will be driven away into darkness.

Daily Devotional Dec. 15, 2022

“We are afflicted in every way but not crushed, perplexed but not driven to despair, persecuted but not forsaken, struck down but not destroyed” (2 Corinthians 4:8-9, NRSV).

     Perseverance has a name. Moon. Moon is a humpback whale who recently swam more than 3000 miles from Canada to Hawaii with a broken spine. Researchers suspect the whale was the unfortunate casualty of a large vessel strike.

Daily Devotional Dec. 14, 2022

“So out of the ground the LORD God formed every animal of the field and every bird of the air and brought them to the man to see what he would call them, and whatever the man called every living creature, that was its name” (Genesis 2:19, NRSV). 

     The results are in. The city of Lafayette, Indiana announced the winning names for its snowplows earlier this week. The list of ten names was trimmed from more than 100 public submissions. All the names make wordplay out of the region’s winter weather.
